Tesla’s Semi Is Finally Hitting The Road. The Timing Couldn’t be Worse (Forbes)
Tesla’s long-awaited Semi truck is now entering production, featuring innovations such as a centered driving position, fast-charging capabilities, and an impressive 500-mile range. However, the rollout comes at a challenging time, as federal support for electric vehicles is declining and energy costs are rising. These factors make it harder to believe CEO Elon Musk’s claim that the electric Semi will cost less to operate than traditional diesel trucks.
Trucking Capacity is About to Tighten Significantly (Freight Waves)
National trucking capacity is tightening significantly, with dry van spot rates reaching a new high of $2.89 per mile, the strongest since 2022. A recent weekly increase of $0.12 per mile indicates rising demand and growing pricing power for carriers. Spring 2026 is seeing an earlier and stronger market surge, driven by factors like industrial demand and post-CNY import activity. Shippers should prepare for higher costs as routing guides are already being challenged, while carriers are reallocating resources.
Trucking Schools Struggle as Trump Administration Strips Immigrant Licenses and Demands English (The Guardian)
Trucking schools are facing significant challenges due to new regulations implemented during the current administration that restrict immigrant licenses and require proficiency in English. As a result, many schools are experiencing a drop in student enrollment, making it increasingly difficult to maintain operations.
These changes have forced trucking schools to reduce staff and cut classes, leading to the loss of accreditation for around 7,000 training providers. The overall impact of these new rules threatens the financial viability of many trucking schools across the country.
Self-Driving Trucks Could Deliver $9 Billion in Annual Consumer Savings, Report Finds (Freight Waves)
A recent report commissioned by Aurora Innovation highlights the potential economic benefits of self-driving trucks in the U.S. trucking industry. It estimates that these autonomous vehicles could save consumers $9 billion annually, contribute $70 billion to the gross domestic product, and save nearly 500 lives each year by 2035, assuming an accelerated deployment scenario.
The initial rollout will focus on Texas, Arizona, Florida, and Georgia, with plans for a national implementation by 2030. Nonetheless, the primary challenge remains regulatory approval, which is a significant obstacle to implementing national technology adjustments within the industry.
