Fleet Buying Spree Signals Trucking Down-Cycle May Be Turning (Freight Waves)
North American fleets sharply increased heavy-duty truck orders in February, with Class 8 orders surging over 150% year-over-year to their highest level since September 2022. Improving freight volumes, stronger rates, and clarity on pricing and regulations have driven this demand. Analysts argue that the trend signals the early stages of a market recovery following a prolonged downturn. However, ongoing risks include high financing costs, geopolitical uncertainty, and potential regulatory changes.
ATA’s Bob Costello: Trucking Industry Prepares for a Slow and Steady Supply-Side Recovery (The Trucker)
At the Truckload Carriers Association’s recent convention, industry leaders expressed cautious optimism about freight recovery after a prolonged downturn. Chief economist Bob Costello noted that while trucking supply is tightening, demand for freight remains sluggish, slowing the pace of recovery. Growth in manufacturing is limited to a few sectors, with broader gains held back by high tariffs and persistent price inflation. Despite these challenges, the consensus is that a slow but steady recovery is underway in the trucking industry.
Trucking Jobs Post Slight Decline in Unexpected Total Payroll Drop (Freight Waves)
The latest U.S. nonfarm payrolls report revealed an unexpected decline of 92,000 jobs, with trucking employment contributing modestly to the shortfall. Truck transportation jobs fell by 500 in February and are now 22,100 below last year’s level, reflecting tightening capacity and cautious hiring despite recent rate volatility. Warehouse jobs saw a slight uptick, but overall employment in that sector remains well below last year’s figures. Experts note that regulatory pressures and inconsistent freight demand are driving these shifts, while rail jobs also continue their gradual decline.
ATRI Calls on Carriers to Share Driver Pay, Operational Costs (Trucking Dive)
The American Transportation Research Institute has opened its annual Operational Costs of Trucking survey, seeking input from motor carriers across all segments by April 24. Operators are asked to share 2025 cost metrics such as driver pay, equipment purchases, and insurance premiums, as well as key performance data. All participants will receive a customized report benchmarking their costs and metrics against similar carriers, with new year-over-year comparisons for multiyear respondents. The initiative aims to help carriers better understand their performance and industry trends.
