During his State of the Union address, Donald Trump proposed the “Dalilah Law, which aims to prohibit undocumented immigrants from obtaining commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) nationwide. Safety concerns drove this initiative after a young girl was injured in an accident with a truck driven by an undocumented immigrant. Although a specific bill has not yet been introduced in Congress, the idea garnered strong support from Republicans during the speech.
FMCSA Spotlights Trucking’slti-Million Dollar Insurance Gap (Freight Waves)
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has alerted Congress to a significant “insurance gap” in the American trucking industry, highlighting that the current federal minimum insurance requirement of $750,000 has not changed since 1985.
The consolidation of motor carriers has intensified pressure on freight brokers, who must now prove they have readily available assets as security.
California Must Let Immigrant Truck Drivers Keep Their Licenses, Judge Rules (Cal Matters)
Under pressure from the current administration, California attempted to revoke over 20,000 trucking licenses from immigrants, including numerous asylum seekers. In a preliminary ruling, a judge in the Bay Area ruled that these drivers should be allowed to retain their licenses, at least for the time being.
The administration has warned that it may revoke California’s authority to issue commercial licenses entirely if the state fails to comply with its directives regarding immigrant truck drivers.
